Our Approach
No matter what the label says, one size does not fit all — and that’s also true of weight loss programs. The Bariatric and Metabolic Weight Loss Center team helps you tailor an effective weight loss strategy specific to your individual needs. We are accredited to work with adolescents and adults, and offer a comprehensive, flexible program that’s tailored to your unique weight loss goals.
We offer both surgical and non-surgical weight loss solutions, including medical management, diet and exercise plans, counseling, behavior modification and group support. We equip you with the tools you need to reach your goals, and then we follow up for long-term success.
World-Class Weight Loss Surgery Center
With more than 4,000 surgeries performed, including over 1,970 bariatric procedures (95 percent done laparoscopically), our team has extensive surgical experience. Our surgeons are board-certified and fellowship trained in laparoscopic surgery. We have also trained and mentored 28 surgical fellows in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery.
We are leading the profession of surgery and furthering knowledge in this medical space, contributing to more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and four textbooks, and making more than 170 presentations worldwide. We are setting performance standards nationally.
Our current research focus includes advancing laparoscopic bariatric surgery techniques and outcomes; new technology in surgery and surgical training; emerging bariatric practices, surgical education and simulation; and foregut pathology.
Dedicated Bariatric Surgery Unit
The Bariatric and Metabolic Weight Loss Center has its own dedicated patient unit located on Stony Brook University Hospital’s ninth floor.
The unit reflects Stony Brook's commitment to helping bariatric surgery patients feel comfortable, recover faster, experience a smoother stay and receive the highest quality care. The bariatric unit offers customized furnishing and equipment designed to accommodate the specific needs of patients receiving weight loss surgery, including:
- Spacious accommodations designed to provide more room to get up and start walking, allowing for a quicker recovery time
- Attractive beds and chairs sized for the comfort of larger patients
- Glass-tiled bathrooms, spa-like in design and equipped with larger showers and high-quality, safety-conscious grab bars and fixtures
- Lift systems and air-inflated hover mats for safe and easy transfer to a bed or gurney
As part of Stony Brook University Hospital, the unit also offers access to the full range of Stony Brook’s expertise, services, technology and facilities. Stony Brook is the only academic medical center on Long Island, and a regional referral center for patients with complex medical needs.
This intense level of care is especially reassuring to patients whose medical conditions may be complex or involve multiple comorbidities, that is, diseases or disorders related to being substantially overweight.
