Have a question about your weight loss journey?

Bariatric medicine focuses on treating and managing obesity and related health conditions. It involves specialized care tailored to each individual's needs, including dietary guidance, exercise plans, behavioral therapy, weight loss medications and weight loss surgery.

Our doctors at Stony Brook Medicine work together to improve overall health and quality of life by addressing the underlying causes of obesity and its associated health risks.

Bariatric surgery is a surgical procedure that promotes weight loss. It may include any one of several procedures that make the stomach smaller so that the patient feels satisfied with less food and fewer calories. Bariatric surgery is for people with a BMI of 40 or greater, or those with a BMI of greater than 35 and co-morbid conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension or sleep apnea.

Our comprehensive, multidisciplinary bariatric program uses a team approach that includes our program coordinator, psychologist, nutritionist and other healthcare professionals. Each expert is dedicated to providing support for bariatric patients, whether or not surgery is part of your weight loss solution. We offer nutrition and lifestyle planning, counseling, physical therapy and medication management to ensure you achieve your goals.

Obesity can greatly increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, as it often leads to insulin resistance—where the body must produce more insulin to meet the metabolic demands of a high fat mass.
