Weight and Health Criteria
Your weight and your health are key factors in determining whether surgery should be part of your weight loss program. Gastric bypass candidates must have:
- A Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 40, or
- A BMI greater than 35 plus two or more significant medical problems, such as respiratory problems (sleep apnea or hypoventilation syndrome), diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure)
For gastric banding procedures, the criteria are five points lower:
- A BMI greater than 35, or
- A BMI greater than 30 plus two significant medical problems
